One of the first projects to be successfully built using crowdfunding as a financial mechanism is Luchtsingel, a 400m long pedestrian bridge in Rotterdam. The project began as an idea by the architecture firm ZUS {www.zus.cc} in 2011. As part of the International Architecture Biënnale Rotterdam (IABR), ZUS, also the co-curators, devised a series of 18 interventions around the train station area to connect a disjointed area of the city. They named  the project Luchtsingel, which translates as “air bridge.”

The team decided to create a crowdfunding campaign called “I Make Rotterdam” and raised money by promising to CNC-route a donors name onto planks of rood that would be used in the construction for every donation over €25. It was wildly successful and ZUS sold over 8,000 planks and raised over €100,000 ($135,000 at the time).

The crowdfunding was not nearly enough to build the entire project, but it was enough to prove to local politicians that the project was needed and that the public supported it. The local government subsequently contributed the remaining €4 million required for construction, and the project was completed in the summer of 2015. Crowdfunding was a success for taking the architect’s initial idea and making it a reality. In the end, it still required substantial public funding, but the crowdfunding campaign was the catalyst for that funding. This is definitely one of best uses of a kickstarter-type of crowdfunding to create actual architecture.
